Weather shifts two finals to Sunday

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ahead of an expected third dose of wintry weather in less than a week, two state high school football championship games are being moved from Saturday to Sunday because of snow predicted to move through Pennsylvania and into the Northeast.

The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association said the Class AA title game between Imhotep Charter and South Fayette will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday. The class AAAA game featuring St. Joseph's Prep against Central Catholic will kick off at 6 p.m. Sunday.

With 5 to 8 inches of snow forecast for the mid-state on Saturday, the league said it was concerned for the safety of players and fans traveling to the games in Hershey. Friday night's Class A and Class AAA title games will go on as scheduled.

The National Weather Service called the arriving storm system complex, warning that it could affect much of the central and eastern U.S., and bring a mix of snow, slush, freezing rain, rain and even thunder. The Philadelphia area is expected to see an inch or 2 of snow.

The storm is expected to arrive Saturday morning, with strong winds and gusts of up to 30 mph.

The early burst of winter weather has been a boon for ski resorts such as Blue Mountain in Palmerton, which was expecting 8 inches of additional snow Saturday.

"It sure helps lay down the base," said Barbara Green, the resort's president. "It's been a great start for us."

For just the second time in its 37-year history, the resort was able to open some slopes the day after Thanksgiving.

Still, she wished Saturday's storm was coming a day earlier, so people had time to get their driveways and neighborhood streets plowed before hitting the slopes.

"I think Sunday is going to be a huge day for us," Green said.
