State of Recruiting: Offensive Line

The 2010 recruiting class has twenty-three slots remaining. With two verbal commitments from quarterback prospects Cole Gautsche and King Davis, Aggie coaches appear to be focusing on offensive lineman after a brief search of the Rivals database.

The Aggie offensive line currently consists of only two seniors; (C)Mike Grady and (RT)Aundre McGaskey. The Aggie roster indicates there are six freshman, three sophomores, and four juniors on the offensive line position this year. A relatively young roster.

So why the focus of recruiting offensive linemen? To borrow a tired and old cliche, you can never have enough good, healthy linemen on roster. Plain and simple. A recruiting move that we feel is time and effort well spent.

Four-star prospect, Cedrick Poutasi, Las Vegas, NV (Desert Pines), 6'5", 322, is a highly recruited offensive guard with offers from eighteen schools. Poutasi was scheduled to visit Arizona State this past weekend during the Sundevil's game against USC. He has no other planned visits at this time. Other schools on top of his list are Oregon, SMU, UCLA, and Utah.

Another four-star prospect is offensive guard, Jordan Simmons, 6'5", 333, out of Encino, CA (Crespi). Simmons has six schools high on his list with no official visits as of yet. Those six schools are California, Nebraska (former NMSU assistant coach Barney Cotton is recruiting Simmons), Oregon, SMU, USC, and Utah. Simmons not only excels on the field, but also excels in the classroom with a reported 3.5 GPA.

With the four-star prospects most likely signing with the top-tier schools in the country, the remaining list of prospects consists of four three-star offensive linemen and one, two-star offensive linemen, to pick from.

A sort of "local" prospect, Kenny Eagle, 6'4", 305, is a JUCO currently attending New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI). NMSU has yet to offer Eagle, but he has received one offer from Middle Tennessee State. Eagles efforts along with the rest of the NMMI front line has them rated as the No. 38th best offensive line according to JCGridiron.com Dirty 30 rankings. UTEP is also eyeing the services of Kenny Eagle.

One other NMMI prospect that we must mention is offensive tackle, Winston Hunt. This massive lineman stands tall at 6'7" but at a slim 285. Slim by lineman standards. Hunt his a nice resume of schools recruiting him with Alabama State leading the charge. Other notables are Auburn, Georgia, Louisville, and Louisiana-Lafayette. Where he winds up could be interesting as this is one JUCO player that may slip under the radar.

National Letter of Intent Signing Day is Wednesday, February 1, 2012.
