Barrett talks early commitment
Just before signing day came around to finish the 2011 class the Orange were informed by one 2012 prospect that he would pick the Orange. That player was local recruit Ben Barrett.
Barrett, 6-foot-5, 255 pounds was offered by the Orange at their first Junior Day of the year and his commitment did not take long after that.
"Syracuse offered me at the Junior Day. I went home talked with my family I was a little shocked because I did not think Syracuse would offer me so early. It was a very fun exciting experience and I kind of knew in my head right then that they were my top school. After that it only took me another week to talk with everybody."
What exactly was it about the hometown team the Barrett liked?
"It was a mixture of things. I grew up here, so I knew a lot about Syracuse University academics. I have had a chance to meet Coach Marrone at Syracuse camps over the past few years. Coach Marrone and his staff is what really made me pick Syracuse. Coach Marrone is a great guy and it is an honor to play for him and his coaching staff," Barrett added. "Academically it is a great school and I grew up a diehard Syracuse fan. Being a fan and now having the chance to get them back to where they were is another reason I picked them."
At Christen Brothers Academy in Dewitt (NY) the prospect plays offensive tackle and defensive end, but when he arrives at Syracuse his position will be up in the air."
"Coach Marrone did not say what position they want me to play. He told me that they are going to wait and see how my body matures because there are a ton of positions I can play."
As of now Barrett likes to play offensive tackle, but he is open and skilled at other offensive line positions.
"I play offensive tackle and defensive end. Primarily though I am comfortable at left tackle," Barrett said. "I feel like I can be very versatile, I can line up inside and play guard or move outside to tackle and go against guys who are more athletic speed rushers."
Even thought the process went quick for Barrett he talked about his relationship with his recruiting coach.
"I was recruited by Dan Conley. He recruited my brother Ted, his senior year and during a year of prep school, so I have known him for awhile. He has been recruiting me though since about last June after camp."
Besides the Orange there were other schools looking to get in on the Empire State product.
"I was being looked at by a lot of FCS teams and during this season interest started coming in from Penn State and Akron. My coach was setting up Junior Days for me as well at Wake Forest and Vanderbilt. Once I received the Syracuse offer came in I canceled everything."
