PaPreps Class AAA Rankings | PaPreps.com | last sorted on 12/16/2013TweetFollow @achiappazzi
It's only fitting that one of the most competitive classes in the state ended with four straight weeks of a different team at the top.
West Allegheny, Cathedral Prep and Bishop McDevitt all laid claim to the top spot before Archbishop Wood ultimately secured it this weekend. It's the second time since PaPreps started the rankings that Archbishop Wood has finished on top of the Class AAA rankings.
The four teams behind the Vikings - Bishop McDevitt, Cathedral Prep, West Allegheny and Central Valley - were all in the conversation as some of the better Class AAA teams throughout the year. Many of them have young talent that will enable them to be in the conversation again next year, but with so much skill back for Wood, those four will commence that battle from somewhere other than the No. 1 spot when the 2014 ranking comes out.
The teams behind that top five are less impressive. Berwick had a nice run but simply couldn't compete outside of Northeastern Pennsylvania. The same held true for district champions Academy Park and Clearfield. Thomas Jefferson, Manheim Central and unranked Cocalico were all good teams that suffered significant losses in their district playoffs.
The picture gets a little cloudier next year with Gateway and potentially Imhotep Charter joining Class AAA, but the usual suspects will likely prevail in the end: The WPIAL, District 12, Bishop McDevitt and Cathedral Prep have consistently been the contenders. Until someone else emerges, expect that to hold true for the foreseeable future.
