PaPreps Class AA Rankings | PaPreps.com | last sorted on 12/16/2013TweetFollow @achiappazzi
For weeks, Imhotep reigned at the top of the Class AA rankings. For weeks, Imhotep was discussed as a team that could potentially compete with the best of every class.
South Fayette embraced the underdog status and proceeded to whip Imhotep on the field in Hershey. The Lions finish the season No. 1, but the conversation could continue with both South Fayette and Imhotep competing with the elites of AAA and AAAA. Both are larger Class AA schools - Imhotep is potentially playing up at AAA next year, while South Fayette has explored playing up - and both have deep, talented rosters.
Class AA was fairly deep this year, overall. Aliquippa threatened South Fayette's defense the most, and the Lions needed a last minute touchdown to beat the Quips at Heinz Field a month ago. Hickory challenged South Fayette by forcing multiple turnovers to give them their closest finish of the season.
Out east, Berks Catholic just couldn't punch it into the end zone against Imhotep, perhaps a sign that the Panthers weren't as invincible as some thought. Plenty of others also had their moments in the sun.
But this is a class that will take on a whole new look next year. With teams potentially leaving (Imhotep) and joining (Dunmore, Southern Columbia), this ranking could have a very new look to it next season.
