PaPreps Class AAAA Rankings | PaPreps.com | last sorted on 12/16/2013TweetFollow @achiappazzi
St. Joseph's Prep's first PIAA title sent a ripple effect through the rest of the final Class AAAA rankings.
It's only appropriate. After all, the state's largest class was also it's most unstable throughout the year. Gateway began at the top but isn't even in the Top 10. St. Joseph's Prep ascended early in the season but dropped to the middle of the pack before the playoffs because of two losses. Heck, Archbishop Ryan wasn't even in the rankings all year but finishes at No. 10 because they beat two state champions.
Parkland was the biggest benefactor from SJP's title, as the Trojans - who gave St. Joseph's Prep an excellent quarterfinal game - rose to the fourth spot. District 3 fell the most, as the trio of teams in the rankings don't look as strong after their representative was blown out by the state's runner-up.
PaPreps hesitated over including four-loss North Penn, but the Knights were a different team at the end of the season and survived a wild District 1 to make it to the championship game. That, plus Archbishop Ryan's status, meant WPIAL semifinalist Upper St. Clair finishes out of the rankings despite just one loss.
As for a look ahead to next year, St. Joseph's Prep will be at the top with so much returning, though the Hawks will have some holes. Beyond that, it's anyone's guess, although Woodland Hills appears to be an early favorite in the WPIAL.
