Each week, PaPreps will highlight some of the more intriguing match-ups of the weekend, from interesting locations to milestone moments to premium contenders going at it, we'll try and grab the best potential games of the weekend.
Later Friday night and again on Saturday, we'll post scores from around the state as they come across the Associated Press wire.
Week 3 Games of the Week
Delone Catholic at Littlestown
Buzz: With many of the larger, headline-grabbing schools either slumping or not playing interesting games, PaPreps is giving some love to a handful of the Class A and Class AA schools this week. That includes this District 3 showdown. These are two high-powered, balanced offenses that are most dangerous on the ground but have enough under center to be dangerous through the air. It should be a lot of fun in Littlestown.
Cumberland Valley at Bishop McDevitt
Buzz: Cumberland Valley is strong enough every year to lurk in the back of District 3's collective mind. But the true gauge always comes when they get their first couple of tests of the year, and no test is bigger in District 3 this year than the Crusaders. CV's doing things the way they usually do (340 rushing yards per game), so they'll be another test for McDevitt's defense. It might be the Crusader's last test until the end of the regular season.
Southern Columbia at Mount Carmel
Buzz: Mount Carmel's tried to mount a challenge to Southern Columbia's latest reign in District 4, only to fall short. The Red Tornadoes are eying Southern Columbia once again, but they may need to launch more of an offensive effort than they've gotten through Weeks 1 and 2. Southern Columbia's scoring 55 and 58 points, and the offense might be too potent even for a good Mount Carmel defense.
South Fayette at Steel Valley
Buzz: Two completely opposite but equally powerful offenses take the field. South Fayette, under Division I QB Brett Brumbaugh, has always been dangerous through the air and Brumbaugh is off to a blistering pace again. The Lions are averaging 50 points per game thanks to Brumbaugh's 404 passing yards and a little balance from RB Grant Fetchet. Steel Valley is also averaging 50 points per game, but their threat is all ground assault. D'Andre Pickens has already run for 517 yards and Duane Murray has 406. The duo is ranked second and sixth, respectively, in rushing in the WPIAL.
Easton at Bethlehem Catholic
Buzz: This one's on here because it just screams classic upset. Bethlehem Catholic is 2-0 after wins over Pocono Mountain West and Emmaus. It's not the toughest slate, but 2-0 is 2-0. BC also catches Easton in between the Rovers' games against Parkland and Allentown Central Catholic. It's a classic trap game, where Easton might be enjoying its 24-0 win over Parkland and looking ahead to an always difficult game against ACC. Is this a year where Becahi pulls off the upset or will Easton show it's more than just a good D-11 team and take care of business?
