It's another season of high school football in Pennsylvania, and Friday night marks the first set of games in the Keystone State. From Philadelphia to Pittsburgh, Erie to Scranton, and all places in between - not to mention overseas - Friday marks the start of a 16-week push to Hershey.
Each week, PaPreps will highlight some of the more intriguing match-ups of the weekend, from interesting locations (such as St. Joseph's Prep trekking to Dallas, Texas) to milestone moments to premium contenders going at it, we'll try and grab the best potential games of the weekend.
Later Friday night and again on Saturday, we'll post scores from around the state as they come across the Associated Press wire.
Week 1 Games of the Week
St. Joseph's Prep at Dallas Jesuit in Dallas, Texas
Buzz: St. Joseph's Prep has had no qualms about hitting the road for a game or two, but this might be a new one. It's not often that a team from Pennsylvania makes the trek to Texas. There's a lot of hype surrounding SJP this year because of their stable of skill players. A strong showing against an out-of-state opponent could help stoke that fire more.
Imhotep Charter at Cardinal Mooney in Youngstown, Ohio
Buzz: Talk about stepping up in class. Cardinal Mooney is traditionally a strong competitor in Ohio, and the out-of-state teams that usually challenge them are Class AAAA schools. But Imhotep has quite a bit of talent, more than several big name Quad-A schools, and they certainly have high aspirations.
North Penn at La Salle
Buzz: It's become an annual classic, and usually it's featured a rematch deep in the state playoffs. But that didn't happen last year, and both teams are out with something to prove. North Penn is looking to become a District 1 contender again, while La Salle wants to prove it still has a strangehold on District 12 despite the buzz surrounding SJP.
Harrisburg at Bishop McDevitt
Buzz: A year ago, this game barely meant anything to those outside of the state capital. Harrisburg was an also-ran and McDevitt was a powerhouse. Now? They might both be state title contenders. Harrisburg's resurrection from nearly shutting down the program to one of the best of District 3 last year was a great story, and there's little doubt they're in great position to pursue an equally strong performance this year.
Mt. Lebanon at North Allegheny
Buzz: North Allegheny has ruled the roost the last two years but has a number of holes to fill thanks to graduation. Mt. Lebanon's a traditionally good, but not elite, program in Quad-A. It's the perfect test to see where North Allegheny stands. Are the Tigers still strong enough to beat good teams early in the season? Or will their warts show through?
West Allegheny at Blackhawk
Buzz: This one makes it because of the outstanding drama of last year's contest. West Allegheny rallied with two very late touchdowns to stun Blackhawk in Week 1 in 2012, and the Cougars have been thinking about revenge ever since. Oh, and West Allegheny might have the best stable of junior skill position players in the western half of the state.
