Each week, PaPreps will highlight some of the more intriguing match-ups of the weekend, from interesting locations to milestone moments to premium contenders going at it, we'll try and grab the best potential games of the weekend.
Later Friday night and again on Saturday, we'll post scores from around the state as they come across the Associated Press wire.
Week 10 Games of the Week
Haverford at Garnet Valley
Buzz: One of several District 1 games with severe playoff implications, Haverford has a chance to secure a top 6 playoff spot with a win. Barring a loss from one of the teams in front of them, it's doubtful they can get too high up, but at least it'd be a home game. Garnet Valley, meanwhile, definitely needs a win to jump onto the home side of the bracket and they might need some help as well. In fact, while a Haverford win might help settle the D-1 bracket, a Garnet Valley win could really make for a wild finish in the district ratings.
Pennsbury at Neshaminy
Buzz: This is the other major District 1 game. Not only is it just a great traditional game between two storied programs, and one that's been moved because of Hurricane Sandy, but it wields enormous playoff impact. Pennsbury is barely hanging onto a first round playoff game, while Neshaminy has from some midseason doldrums to be right on the doorstep of that home game. The good news for Neshaminy is that even a loss shouldn't drop the Skins too far, so they won't draw a Downingtown East or Ridley.
Scranton at Abington Heights
Buzz: A cross-classification game in the final week of the regular season, this has little to do with the playoffs and everything to do with deeper playoff hopes. Both teams have shown plenty of talent, and they have a couple of good wins. But the talent pool in District 2 is shallower than others, which means that games like this carry even more weight. Scranton needs the win just to maintain the status quo, while Abington Heights needs the win to distance itself from the rest of the pack in the region in Class AAA.
Berks Catholic at Wyomissing
Buzz: Wyomissing has had all the publicity in District 3 in Class AA because of their 9-0 record and Alex Anzalone's recruiting twists. But Berks Catholic, still relatively new as a school, is also 9-0. Naturally a win would give Berks some serious validation, but it'd also likely vault them into the top seed in the district. But Wyomissing has been tested by better opponents throughout the season.
Richland at Bellwood-Antis
Buzz: Two 9-0 teams in different classifications, this is really a tune-up for the playoffs. Richland will go into the District 6 playoffs as the top seed there and a heavy favorite. Bellwood-Antis is primed to do the same in Class A. So what's the benefit of this game? The coaches can treat it like a playoff game without it carrying the same win-or-go-home results. Preparation is the key in the playoffs, and they essentially get an extra week against a tough opponent.
Tamaqua at Marian Catholic
Buzz: This has a host of deep threads running through it. Not only is it the public vs. private school battle of Tamaqua, but a win provides a significant boost for both teams. Tamaqua could use a win over an 8-win Marian Catholic squad to try and leapfrog Catasaqua for the top seed in District 11 Class AA. Marian, meanwhile, could do the same over a 9-win Tamaqua for a rise in Class A. A Tamaqua win also does two other things: It'd give them the Anthracite League title outright, and it'd give Tamaqua its first 10-0 start. Ever. Lot on the line.
