Gators grab a quarterback commitment
Gators hosting first Jr. Day of 2013 cycle on Saturday | ITG Recruiting Big Board | Five-star Fowler says final decision is made | Poole clears up rumors | Recruiting Burning Questions - One week to goMORE FLORIDA RECRUITING:
Although it may not come clean for a few days, all signs seem to be pointing toward the Gators nabbing commitment No. 21.
Rivals recruiting analyst Mike Farrell has received confirmation from a source that three-star quarterback Skyler Mornhinweg has flipped his commitment from Penn State to Florida. Mornhinweg is expected to go public with the information in a public announcement sometime during the next three days.
After long expecting to not take a quarterback in 2012, Florida renewed its intent to sign one after new offensive coordinator Brent Pease took over.
The list surfaced earlier in the week when Deltona (Fla.) Trinity Christian Academy quarterback Paxton Lynch told Inside the Gators Florida had offered Mornhinweg but given him a Wednesday night deadline to commit. If Mornhinweg did not commit, the offer would be passed on to Lynch. UF coaches seemed to have expanded that deadline as Mornhinweg's news did not go public until Friday after Lynch decided he would be taking an official visit to Memphis.
Mornhinweg is the son of Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg and is ranked the No. 36 prospect in Pennsylvania.
Said Farrell: "He was all PSU until they started recruiting another QB and then when they took (Steven) Bench, he decided to go where he felt wanted. Tough kid, good arm, project of sorts though, will take a few years to develop."
Mornhinweg's father has a relationship with Pease that dates back to their days as a player and coach at Montana. Mornhinweg's decision to attend Florida will come out of a final four that also included Penn State, Virginia Tech and Stanford.
